Jessica Lange, a multi-award-winning stage and screen actress, returns to Broadway in spring 2024 in Paula Vogel's *Mother Play*.

Jessica Phyllis Lange was born April 20, 1949 in Cloquet, Minnesota. After studying art and photography at the University of Minnesota, she moved to Paris, where she first studied mime. She later studied acting in New York City at the HB Studio.

She made her film debut in the 1976 *King Kong* remake and went on to perform in some theatre-related films, including Bob Fosse's *All That Jazz* as the Angel of Death, a part Fosse wrote specifically for her. Her screen career hit a peak in 1982, when she became the first person in 40 years to receive two Oscar nominations in the same year. She won for her performance in *Tootsie* and was also nominated for *Frances*.

On screen, she also co-starred multiple times with the playwright/director/actor Sam Shepard, with whom she was also romantically involved for almost 30 years. In 1984, she made her TV debut in Tennessee Williams's *Cat on a Hot Tin Roof*, and his play *A Streetcar Named Desire* marked her Broadway debut in 1992.

Lange became known for her performances in classic plays on TV and on stage: She reprised her role of Blanche for TV in 1995, and her other Broadway credits include Amanda Wingfield in *The Glass Menagerie* and Mary Tyrone in *Long Day's Journey Into Night*. Her performance as Mary won her the Tony Award for Best Leading Actress in a Play.

At the turn of the 21st century, Lange starred in *Titus*, Julie Taymor's film adaptation of *Titus Andronicus*, and a London production of *Long Day's Journey* in which she reprised her role of Mary, making her the first American actress to earn an Olivier Award nomination. When she ventured back into TV in the 2010s, she earned three Emmy Awards — one for *Grey Gardens* and two for *American Horror Story* — making her one of only 24 people to receive the Triple Crown of Acting (Oscar, Emmy, Tony).

James Joseph Parsons&nbsp;was born on March 24, 1973 in Houston, Texas. He is&nbsp;known for his Golden Globe and Emmy Award-winning TV role as&nbsp;Sheldon Cooper on CBS's&nbsp;The Big Bang Theory.

He was raised in Spring, Texas, and attended Klein Oak High School. He earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Houston and&nbsp;enrolled in graduate school at the University of San Diego in 1999. Throughout his education, Parsons took a keen interest in theatre, appearing regularly in shows at the Stages Repertory Theater, becoming a founding member of&nbsp;Infernal Bridegroom Productions, and completing a two-year course in classical acting in partnership with the Old Globe Theatre. He moved to New York City after his graduation in 2001.

He made his Off-Broadway debut as&nbsp;Jeremiah in Manhattan Ensemble Theater's production of Franz Kafka's&nbsp;The Castle, which opened in January 2002. He went on to appear in two productions for La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego:&nbsp;as&nbsp;Valère in&nbsp;Molière's&nbsp;Tartuffe&nbsp;in 2002 and as&nbsp;Prince Tartaglia in&nbsp;The Love for Three Oranges&nbsp;in 2004. Parsons made his Broadway debut in the critically acclaimed Broadway premiere of&nbsp;The Normal Heart in April 2011, with his portrayal of&nbsp;Tommy Boatwright earning him a Theatre World Award. He and the cast also received a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Ensemble Performance. He returned to Broadway in May 2012 to take on the lead role of&nbsp;Elwood P. He got his big break after being cast as Sheldon Cooper in CBS's&nbsp;hit sitcom The Big Bang Theory.&nbsp;From&nbsp;2007 to 2019, he starred in a total of 279&nbsp;episodes, won a Golden Globe in 2011, received two further Golden Globe nominations in 2013 and 2014, won a total of four Emmy Awards in 2010, 2011, 2013, and 2014, and received two additional Emmy Award nominations in 2009 and 2012. With audiences on three sides of a small, knickknack-laden stage, which actors frequently spill off of with instruments in hand, [*A Man of No Importance*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/24233-a-man-of-no-importance-tickets) at [Classic Stage Company](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/classic-stage-company) perfectly captures the feel of scrappy community theatre in a church basement. That's a high compliment, to clarify. In fact, it's the entire point of the show, a stirring and gorgeous one in its simplicity.

The musical is set up as a play-within-a-play, with bus passengers in Dublin introducing the story of their conductor, Alfie Byrne ([Jim Parsons](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/jim-parsons)). They're all members of his amateur theatre troupe, save for the bus driver, Robbie (A. J. Shively), though Alfie hopes he'll join for more reasons than one. Alfie is gay; Robbie is not, but the next best thing to being with him, then, is convincing him to lead an Oscar Wilde play.

Wilde is, of course, a deliberate choice for the playwright that consumes Alfie's every waking moment. "Wilde had no life aside from art. Remember that. He lived in the realm of the aesthetic. He never descended into the sewer," Alfie says of his idol. He does the same thing, throwing himself into the theatre troupe to escape his desires, while secretly wishing the theatre will be his ticket to living his truth. (Alfie is urged on at points by Wilde's ghost, played by Thom Sesma, thoroughly enjoying himself.) It's a clever conceit, as *A Man of No Importance* is very aware of its own theatricality, and how performing Alfie's story shows acceptance in itself.

Parsons convincingly inhabits Alfie's earnestness and diffidence, if not his Irish accent. Alfie's intimate little story of self-discovery isn't quite big enough for all its characters, but each member of the ensemble shines in even the most underwritten parts. Shereen Ahmed is marvelous as the reticent leading lady Adele, and Mary Beth Peil's few lines as Mrs. Grace are some of the show's funniest. ("She's a little old [to play] me daughter, Mr. Byrne. Can she be me sister?" she asks of the decades-younger Adele.)

In stage time, Alfie is most evenly matched by his sister Lillian (a motherly, wisecracking Mare Winningham) who can't understand why he hasn't settled down. And Shively brings an effortless, mischievous charm to Robbie, lighting up the stage with "The Streets of Dublin," his energetic solo and the show's best number among a strong array of Irish folk tunes by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty.

*A Man of No Importance* ultimately rushes to its end, but this being a 20-year-old musical whose writer (the late, great Terrence McNally) has passed, dwelling on that is fruitless. This revival — the first since its New York premiere in 2002 — has songs and performances that will rouse the soul, and that's of the utmost importance.

'A Man of No Importance' review — Jim Parsons leads a simple yet stirring revival

Celia Keenan-Bolger was born on&nbsp;January 26, 1978 in Detroit, Michigan and is a&nbsp;Tony Award winner&nbsp;and Broadway favorite. Celia Keenan-Bolger returns to Broadway in Paula Vogel's Mother Play in April 2024.

Keenan-Bolger trained at both the Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit and the Detroit School of Arts and graduated from the University of Michigan with a BFA in musical theatre. She began her stage career in regional theatres such as the Goodman Theatre in Chicago&nbsp;and Theatre Works in Silicon Valley, and she made her Off-Broadway debut as Aggie in&nbsp;Summer of '42&nbsp;in December 2001.

During the Kennedy Center's Sondheim Celebration in 2002, she starred as Johanna in&nbsp;Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street,&nbsp;and she would then perform again off Broadway in January 2003&nbsp;in Second Stage Theatre's production of Michael John LaChiusa's&nbsp;Little Fish. Also in 2003, she would originate the role of&nbsp;Clara Johnson in the celebrated musical&nbsp;The&nbsp;Light in&nbsp;the Piazza&nbsp;at both Seattle's Intiman Theatre and Chicago's&nbsp;Goodman Theatre.

She originated the role of&nbsp;Olive Ostrovsky in William Finn and&nbsp;Rachel Sheinkin's&nbsp;The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee at&nbsp;the&nbsp;Barrington Stage Company in the summer of 2004,&nbsp;reprised her performance off Broadway at&nbsp;Second Stage Theatre in January 2005, and did so again on&nbsp;Broadway,&nbsp;marking&nbsp;her Broadway debut in April 2005. She was nominated for her first Tony Award for her performance as Olive and received a Theatre World Award and a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Ensemble Performance.&nbsp;She remained with the production until September 17, 2006. Her next Broadway venture would be to originate the role of&nbsp;Éponine in the 2006 revival of&nbsp;Les Misérables, playing the role from October 2006 to January 2008, earning a Drama Desk nomination in 2007.

Keenan-Bolger returned off Broadway for her next productions,&nbsp;starring as Mary in the musical&nbsp;Saved&nbsp;at Playwrights Horizons from&nbsp;May to June 2008, as Katie in&nbsp;Bachelorette&nbsp;for Second Stage Theatre from July to August 2010, and as&nbsp;Jenny Bridges in&nbsp;A Small Fire&nbsp;from December 2010 to January 2011, once again at Playwrights Horizons. She won her first Tony Award in the category of Best Performance By An Actress In A Featured Role In A Play&nbsp;for her portrayal, and she ended&nbsp;her year-long run in the production on November 3, 2019. She led the reopening cast of the play once more starting in October 2021.

A regrettably sour note has hung over this new Broadway adaptation of <a href="/show/to-kill-a-mockingbird">To Kill a Mockingbird</a>&nbsp;at the <a href="/theatres/shubert-theatre">Shubert Theatre</a>, when the theatrical rights for an adaptation of Harper Lee's historic novel were assigned to it by Lee and subsequently her estate (who then challenged the version produced by playwright and television writer Aaron Sorkin that led to litigation that was settled in court).But the producer Scott Rudin in turn threatened other planned productions of a previous long-established version with litigation to stop them. These included a UK national tour based on its last London production at the Open Air Theatre in Regent's Park in 2013 that had been announced months earlier, and was summarily cancelled on the eve of its opening; and American regional stock and amateur productions that were similarly affected (but offered the rights by Rudin to re-rehearse and present his new version).Of course a producer wants to both protect and maximise his own investment in a property he's acquired, but it all got very messy as the other companies had all secured the rights in the previous version in good faith, and were innocent parties to a dispute between a David-and-Goliath battle of now rival versions.Given that the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel it is based on is about ensuring justice is done, there was a certain dramatic irony in the perceived injustices that resulted (heartbroken child actors were reported to have written to Rudin when the production they'd rehearsed was cancelled).Lee's Pulitzer prize-winning story revolves around an intensely moral lawyer Atticus Finch who takes on the defence of a black man falsely accused of raping a young white woman in rural 1930s racially divided Alabama. Sorkin -- who famously scripted "The West Wing" -- is certainly good at illuminating the behind-the-scenes machinations of the legal process here, both official and unofficial, including a quiet home visit from the presiding judge and a less quiet attempt by the woman's father to attack Finch (and also to take part in an attempted lynching of his client).Sorkin and his director Bartlett Sher stage it primarily as a scorching courtroom drama, folding it seamlessly with scenes from Finch's home life as his two worlds collide.Given the rise of white nationalism in Trump's America, a lot of this feels very current. But it also makes for gripping, seriously absorbing theatre. A top-flight Broadway cast, led by the grave but sympathetic <a href="/actor-profile/jeff-daniels">Jeff Daniels</a> as Atticus Finch, also features solid support from <a href="/actor-profile/celia-keenan-bolger">Celia Keenan-Bolger</a> and Will Pullen as his children, Gideon Glick as their best friend Dill, LaTanya Richardson Jackson as housemaid and confidant Calpurnia, Gbenga Akinnagbe as the defendant Tom Robertson and Frederick Weller as the victim's father.Two live musicians, seated on either side of designer Miriam Buether's atmospherically detailed stage, play Adam Guettel's alternately folksy and ominous score, to underscore and frame the action.Now carrying an advance ticket sale of over $20million, To Kill a Mockingbird is slaying Broadway -- and looks like it could be around for a long stay, not the usual 12-16 weeks that most plays get.(Photo by&nbsp;Julieta Cervantes)

Hayes Theater - TodayTix

The Hayes Theater officially opened as The Little Theatre on March 12, 1912. The building was designed by Harry Creighton Ingalls and built by Winthrop Ames, opening with John Galsworthy's play *The Pigeon*.

During the 1920s, the theatre was redesigned by Herbert J. Krapp to increase the capacity from 300 to 590. The New York Times purchased the building in 1931, converting it to a conference hall under the name of New York Times Hall.

In 1979, Martin Markinson and Donald Tick bought the theatre and renamed it in 1983 to the Helen Hayes Theatre to honor the actress. A previous theatre bearing her name was demolished in 1982 to make way for the Marriott Marquis Hotel.

On April 18, 2015, it was officially announced that Second Stage Theater had purchased the property. It was later revealed that the venue would be renamed the Hayes Theater, and it opened in spring 2018. The Hayes Theater is the smallest Broadway theatre, now with 597 seats.

The Hayes Theater, located on 44th Street between Eighth Avenue and Broadway, is closest to the 42nd Street - Port Authority subway stop on the A, C, and E lines. Additionally, the nearest bus stops are 8th Ave/W 46th St. on the M20 and M104 lines; 7th Ave/W. 44th St. on the M104 line; and 8th Ave/W 43rd St. on the M20, M104, and M34A-SBS lines.
