GODDESS comes to The Public for its New York premiere featuring music and lyrics by Michael Thurber, book and direction by Associate Artistic Director/Resident Director Saheem Ali, additional book material by James Ijames, and choreography by Darrell Grand Moultrie. A mysterious singer arrives at Moto Moto, a steamy Afro-jazz club in Mombasa, Kenya. She casts an entrancing spell on everyone, including a young man who has returned home from studying in America. Will the big plans for his life—stepping into a political legacy and marrying his fiancée—be upended? Inspired by the myth of Marimba, the Goddess who created beautiful songs from her heartbreak, this new musical is a rousing tale of romance, the supernatural, and the quest towards one’s truest self.

Amber Iman plays Rafaela in [*Lempicka*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/25999-lempicka-tickets) on Broadway at the [Longacre Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/longacre-theatre) from March 19, 2024.

Iman made her Broadway debut as Nina Simone in 2013's *Soul Doctor* and went on to perform in 2016's *Shuffle Along*. Between that show and her 2024 return to Broadway in *Lempicka*, she performed with touring productions of *Hamilton* and *A Christmas Carol* and starred in the world-premiere musical *Goddess* at Berkeley Repertory Theatre in California.

For playing Aldonza in *Man of la Mancha* at the Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington, D.C., Iman won the 2018 Emery Battis Award for Acting Excellence and was nominated for the Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Musical. She also won an LA Stage Alliance Ovation Award for playing Joy in the musical *Witness Uganda*.

The **Longacre Theatre** is a historic theatre located in the heart of New York City's world-famous Broadway district. Joseph Papp founded The Public Theater in 1954 as the Shakespeare Workshop. The organization moved into its current home on Lafayette Street in Lower Manhattan in 1967.

The Public Theater building was under risk of demolition until the Public persuaded the city council to sell them the building for use as a theatre. As a result, the building was granted New York City landmark status in 1965, and architect Giorgio Cavaglieri converted it into a theatre in 1967.

The company’s inaugural production in its new home was the world premiere of *Hair*, which also marked its first non-Shakespeare offering. The building is comprised of five performance spaces: the Anspacher Theater (which has a 275-seat capacity), LuEsther Hall (160 seats), Martinson Theater (199 seats), Newman Theater (299 seats), and Shiva Theater (99 seats).

The Public complex also include office spaces; the restaurant and bar The Library; and Joe’s Pub, a cabaret-style venue used for smaller musical revues and soloists. The company also operates the [Delacorte Theater](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/delacorte-theater) in Central Park, which has been home to free Shakespeare in the Park productions during the summer since 1954.

The Public Theater is closest to the Astor Place subway stop on the 6 line and the 8 St - NYU stop on the R and W lines. The closest bus stop is Lafayette St./Astor Pl. on the M1 line.
